I finally learned to love learning, and heres why:
(update: this is an old article from my blog, that I’ve moved over)
It took me a while, but I’ve finally come around to loving learning.
Funny, considering how much information we’re surrounded by these days. But it’s more than just having access to knowledge. For me, it’s about curiosity and the drive to keep growing, personally and professionally.
At 46, I’ve hit this cool moment where personal and professional growth feel like they’re feeding off each other. It’s not about learning a new skill to check a box. It’s like tapping into this endless well of information and knowing it’s on me to make the most of it.
Learning isn’t optional anymore. It’s something we can all do to make ourselves, our work, and even the world around us a little better.
Take my path, for example.
I didn’t go the traditional college route. I built my first web design business by figuring things out as I went. I didn’t know HTML or CSS when I started, I had to teach myself everything. I remember taking on projects where I had zero clue how I’d pull it off, but I know I’d figure it out. You may think I’m stretching the truth here, but the reality is, I literally went to craigslist found people who had a “web design” need, told them I could do it, made up a price, and figured it out.
Starting a web design business? Honestly, not the hardest part.
Keeping customers? That’s where the real learning happened.
I had to learn how to sell my expertise, how to build real relationships with clients. And that learning never really stopped. The more my business grew, the more I had to grow with it. Looking back, that taught me more about success than anything else ever could.
Now it’s crazy how much we have at our fingertips.
Between AI, online courses, and an entire universe of resources, there’s almost no excuse not to be learning. But that’s where a lot of people get stuck, we don’t take full advantage of it.
I get it. Life’s busy.
But think about it. We have access to stuff our parents could only dream about. That’s wild. And honestly, we kind of owe it to ourselves to dive in and use it.
Learning isn’t just about getting ahead at work.
It’s about figuring out who you are, building resilience, and just enjoying the process. For me, learning has become a way to deal with the anxiety that comes with life.
Knowing I can always learn something new, even when life throws curveballs, is comforting.
Nobody can take that from you.
